Sustaining the Fire
The Summer Solstice has passed. The longest day of the year is behind us. The intentions have been written, the visions received, and the sparks of inspiration ignited. Now comes the part no one talks about: the tending.
There is a moment after every ceremony, every breakthrough, every powerful realization when ordinary life returns. The dishes still need washing. The emails still need answering. The body still needs rest. The world still asks us to show up.
This is where many of us lose the thread. We become addicted to the spark and forget the sacredness of tending the flame. We chase peak experiences and neglect the steady practices that keep the fire alive. Nature teaches us differently. The sun rises day after day. Its strength lies in consistency, not intensity.
Perhaps our spiritual lives are meant to work the same way. As someone who works with plant medicines, I often witness people seeking transformation through grand experiences. They desire the revelation, the breakthrough. These moments are beautiful, yet lasting change is rarely built on a single event. It grows through relationships with ourselves and the Earth, and through practices that remind us who we are.
This is one of the greatest gifts cannabis has offered me: not escape or enlightenment, but return. Return to my breath, my body, and the creative current beneath fear. Over time, I’ve realized my cannabis practice isn’t about reaching an elevated state but deepening my connection to the life I already have.
When inspiration feels scarce, cannabis helps me reconnect to wonder. When anxiety clouds my vision, it helps me hear my intuition again. When I feel disconnected from my purpose, it helps me remember the path beneath my feet. Not because the plant does the work for me. Because it helps me become present enough to do the work myself.
That is how fires are kept alive. Not with dramatic bursts of fuel, but steady tending: daily attention, reverence, and care.
This month, instead of focusing on what you want to create, focus on what you want to nourish. Here’s a clear cannabis ritual for tending the flame: To begin, gather the following items for your practice.
Your cannabis sacrament
A candle
Your journal
A small bowl of water
Light the candle. Sit comfortably and take a few breaths. Spend a few moments observing the flame—notice how it moves and responds to subtle shifts in its environment. Allow yourself to settle in and be present with the flame before moving on.
Next, intentionally consume your cannabis sacrament. As you do so, silently or aloud, ask yourself: What in my life deserves consistent devotion right now? (Focus on what feels worthy, not just exciting or urgent.)
Open your journal and respond to these prompts:
What daily practice helps me stay connected to my truth?
Where am I relying on motivation instead of devotion?
What would it look like to trust small, steady steps?
When you are finished, gently dip your fingertips into the bowl of water. Anoint your forehead and then your heart with the water as you offer yourself this blessing: May I have the wisdom to know what is worth tending and the patience to grow slowly. May I trust that every small act of devotion strengthens the fire within me.
A single spark can start a fire, but only devotion keeps it burning. The world celebrates ignition; nature rewards stewardship. As we move deeper into summer, let us each be caretakers of our sacred flame, tending it patiently and intentionally. Let us trust that what is nourished will grow, and remember that true magic is found not only in the brightness of our breakthroughs, but in the lasting illumination created by the wisdom we carry forward.
