Summer Solstice: Standing in the Fullness of Your Light
The Summer Solstice arrives each year as a sacred portal. It’s the longest day and shortest night of the year. It’s the grand goodbye to the sun as it reaches its peak and begins its slow journey back toward darkness. Across cultures and throughout history, people have gathered to honor this annual turning point. It’s a celebration of life, abundance, fertility, creativity, and the power of the sun.
And this year, the Solstice is greeting me in a particularly powerful way. It asks a simple yet profound question:
Can you allow yourself to be fully seen?
I’m not talking about the polished, productive version striving for worthiness. I mean the radiant, untamed, wildly alive version that exists underneath the constantly shifting social masks I wear. My authentic self is extraordinary, and I love her fiercely! But I rarely let her out unfiltered.
There have been seasons of my life when I felt deeply connected to the energy of being seen. I felt free to be myself. Ideas flowed effortlessly. Opportunities appeared at just the right moment. Creativity felt endless. I moved through the world with a sense of freedom and possibility, trusting that life was unfolding in my favor. In those seasons, manifestation wasn't something I struggled to do. It was simply the natural byproduct of being fully alive. I felt abundant because I was connected to myself, to nature, to my intuition, and to the deep knowing that I was meant to be here and take up space. And, in my creative bliss, I often turned to cannabis as a social lubricant, guiding me to an open-minded, easy-going headspace that allowed me to do my best thinking.
But I've also experienced periods where that connection felt distant. When it didn’t feel safe to be fully me. Times when fear grew louder than trust. When self-doubt crowded out inspiration. When the spark that once felt so accessible seemed hidden beneath the responsibilities and challenges of daily life. Times when everyday tasks seemed impossible to accomplish. I would berate myself for not having it more together. And I turned to cannabis in these moments as well. This time, as a means to hide and distract instead of reveal and elevate.
I found I was turning to cannabis no matter my mood or surroundings. And I came to realize that the same dose of the same plant could either illuminate or conceal. I didn’t know yet that cannabis meets us where we are and matches whatever we bring to the party. And, since I’m a curious little bug, I couldn’t just leave that thought alone. I wanted to know why cannabis could make me feel so connected and creative, yet other times leave me feeling exhausted and emotionally sucked dry. So I learned about how and why cannabis works in the body. I discovered the many therapeutic benefits of cannabis and educated myself on how to harness the positive effects without succumbing to the pitfalls of overconsumption and dependence. I found out that there’s a lot more to cannabis than just getting high.
Now, after years of developing a relationship with this plant medicine and actively integrating my cannabis journey, I am approaching this summer solstice as an invitation to renewed vitality and a reminder not to hide or filter my authentic self. Once I started approaching cannabis as a sacrament rather than an escape, it helped me reconnect with the version of myself that knows how to dream. The version that trusts. The me that manifests from love and remembers that abundance is not something I have to earn, but something I freely receive when I’m properly aligned. Cannabis isn’t a miracle cure, but it helps me finally feel safe enough to begin to be seen. Cannabis doesn't create abundance or joy for me. It helps me remember it and tap into that frequency. Through intentional use, cannabis quiets the noise that pulls me away from myself. It softens the grip of anxiety, perfectionism, and overthinking. It creates space for curiosity, imagination, and hope to emerge again.
This Solstice, I invite you to spend a few moments honoring your own light. If you’re looking for a summer solstice ritual to help you, feel free to try this:
Gather your preferred plant medicine, a journal, a candle, and something from nature (a flower, leaf, stone, or shell)
Light your candle and take a moment to acknowledge the sun's gift of life and growth.
As you consume your medicine intentionally, place your hand on your chest and ask:
Where in my life am I being invited to shine more brightly? Allow the answer to emerge without forcing it.Journal on the following prompts:
What is currently flourishing in my life?
What gifts or talents am I ready to share more openly?
What fears are dimming my light?
What would become possible if I trusted my own brilliance?
Write down three intentions you wish to nurture for the remainder of the summer.
Close by offering gratitude to the sun, the earth, your plant medicine ally, and yourself.
May abundance flow where fear once lived, may you stand unapologetically in the fullness of your light, and may you remember, again and again, that the sun you seek has always lived within you.
Solstice blessings,
Amy Olson
